Exploring Apostle Islands

Because it’s so cold up here in Wisconsin already, kayaking out to the islands is out of the picture for my warm Southern blood. So I booked a boat ride around the Apostle Islands with Apostle Island Cruises out of Bayfield. I had an amazing time and I think I got to see a lot more of the islands than I would have on a kayak. (Although next time I’d like to camp on one of the islands).

This boat ride was so cool! It was like $48 and took 2.5 hours(ish) to cover about 50 miles of sea.  It took us all along the Apostle Islands and we got a great guided tour by the captain who told some great stories along the way.

Devils Island:

Sea Caves & Lighthouse

We made it out to Devil’s Island which was named such Maji-manidoo-minis in Ojibwemowin, meaning Evil Spirits Island - based on the sounds of the waves crashing on the caves which make a rad ethereal sound.

There were all kinds of sea caves and cool arch and rock formations & a beautiful lighthouse that the captain gave us some nice historical bits about.

TIPS for the boat ride:

I sat on the roof of the boat & got soaked, so if you go here’s what I recommend you wear:

  • dress for weather 20* colder than it is outside

  • Hat

  • Mittens

  • Easily-drying pants (Not jeans)

  • Warm boots 🥾 and socks 🧦

  • Winter coat

  • Something to cover your whole face - like a good scarf🧣
